The Diagnostic and Predictive Role of Ankle-Brachial Index in Clinical Practice

چکیده
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been associated with specific risk factors such as smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM) as well as previous coronary and cerebrovascular disease [1]. Data show that the distribution, extent, and progression of PAD are influenced by cardiovascular risk factors although the findings are not consistent [2]. PAD prevalence and incidence are both sharply age-related, rising >10% among patients in their 60s and 70s [1]. With aging of the global population, it seems likely that PAD will be increasingly common in the future. Additionally, symptomatic PAD events have been strongly associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular events [3]. Therefore, proper clinical evaluation and early diagnosis is imperative.

Diagnostic Value of Ankle Brachial Index for Myocardial Ischemia in Asymptomatic Diabetic Patients and Comparison with Myocardial Perfusion Imaging
Objective: The ankle-brachial index (ABI) as a simple test which can detect peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Therefore in this study we try to evaluate the diagnostic value of ABI for silent myocardial ischemia in diabetic patients and compare the results with myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) results. Materials and Methods: All 149 diabetic patients in this study were categorized according...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Abnormal Ankle-brachial Index and Micro-vascular Complications of Diabetes Type II
Background:The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing worldwide and the relationship between peripheral vascular involvement and the complications of diabetes disease, such as retinopathy, has been reported in some studies but has not yet been fully proven. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between diabetes complications and peripheral and central vascular involve...

متن کاملPrognostic value of endothelial function in patients with atherosclerosis: systematic review.
Analysis of flow-mediated vasodilation (FMV) of the brachial artery by use of ultrasound allows assessing endothelial function, and provides pathophysiological, diagnostic and prognostic information. This systematic review was aimed at assessing the literature level of evidence of the predictive capacity of endothelial function, measured through brachial artery FMV by use of ultrasound, regardi...
متن کاملCan we measure the ankle-brachial index using only a stethoscope? A pilot study.
BACKGROUND Ankle-brachial index (ABI) is an excellent method for the diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) when it is performed with Doppler. However, this device is not always available for primary care physicians. The ABI measured with stethoscope is an easy alternative approach, but have not been proved to be useful. OBJECTIVE To assess the accuracy of the ABI measured using a ste...
